Desde 1967, el 2 de abril, coincidiendo con la fecha del nacimiento del escritor danés Hans Christian Andersen, el IBBY promueve la celebración del Día Internacional del Libro Infantil con el fin de promocionar los buenos libros infantiles y juveniles y la lectura entre los más jóvenes.
Cada año, una sección nacional del IBBY tiene la oportunidad de ser la patrocinadora internacional del Día del Libro Infantil y selecciona un escritor representativo y a un reconocido ilustrador de su país para que elaboren el mensaje dirigido a todos los niños del mundo y el cartel que se distribuye por todo el mundo, y se promueva la celebración en las bibliotecas, centros escolares, librerías, etc.

Reading is Fun
Maybe I was nine at that time. I came home from school into an empty house. My mother and brother were somewhere in town. I got myself a book, laid down on the sofa and started reading. From that moment I wasn’t alone any longer. A door seemed to open. The characters of the book paid me visits.
Now I am older and I write books myself. My nine-year-old son sometimes lies there with a book, just as I used to do. He has stepped into the book, he is living with the characters and is participating in the action. He feels the way they do, he suffers and he is happy with them.
Reading is fun. I realize that again and again, and so do my own children, and many others. I have asked many times: “What makes reading so much fun for you?” And they’ve given me lots of answers.
Reading is fun...because with fantasy you can put yourself in the place of the characters, because with books you can dream, because with books you are no longer alone, because you learn and discover new things, because you can always come back to your books and read them all over again, because books can be like good friends, because they surprise you, because the words and sentences form in your head pictures that you can fill with your own ideas.
Imagination...because you hit upon things you have often thought of but never talked about.
One child told me: “Sometimes in the evening I am lying in bed, and suddenly there is something cracking in my room. I am frightened. Then I start to read, and the fear is gone.” For this child, too, reading is fun. It is the sort of fun the child very much needs on those evenings. And for him reading is more than just fun. Reading is fun...and more than that.
On this International Children’s Book Day I wish that not only children should read and let themselves get carried away by children’s books. Adults should try the same and rediscover the fun of it.
