¡Leer es una rumba!
Desde 1967, el 2 de abril, coincidiendo con la fecha del nacimiento del escritor danés Hans Christian Andersen, el IBBY promueve la celebración del Día Internacional del Libro Infantil con el fin de promocionar los buenos libros infantiles y juveniles y la lectura entre los más jóvenes.
Cada año, una sección nacional del IBBY tiene la oportunidad de ser la patrocinadora internacional del Día del Libro Infantil y selecciona un escritor representativo y a un reconocido ilustrador de su país para que elaboren el mensaje dirigido a todos los niños del mundo y el cartel que se distribuye por todo el mundo, y se promueva la celebración en las bibliotecas, centros escolares, librerías, etc.
En 1992, el país elegido es Colombia. El diseño del cartel es de Alekos, y el texto, de Pilar Lozano.

Se llama Myriam Prieto y es una niña de ocho años. «A mí no me gusta mi nombre —fue lo primero que confesó tímidamente—. En la escuela me dicen ¡Myriam apriete!, y a mí me da vergüenza.» Y su cara morena, redonda como una naranja, de repente se puso toda colorada.
La conocí en la sala infantil de la Biblioteca Pública de Pasto. «Es la lectora más asidua —dijo el joven que tiene por oficio encantar a los niños, no con flautas mágicas, sino con los libros—. Viene todas las tardes al salir de la escuela.»
—¿Por qué vienes tanto? —le pregunté a la niña.
—¡Me siento tan feliz! —dijo. Alzó los hombros y recostó su cabeza sobre uno de ellos. Este gesto me hizo entender que para ella era suficiente la explicación.
Pero detrás de la verdad existe otra verdad: Myriam es como un pequeño ratón de biblioteca. Le gusta leer mucho y su madre, que es limpiadora, jamás ha podido comprarle un libro de cuentos.
—¿Y qué lees?
—¡De todo! —Y de nuevo alzó los hombros.— Es que, cuando sea mayor, quiero ser escritora o artista…
Y es tanto el amor de esta pequeña por los libros, que inventó una forma de tenerlos siempre con ella: los memoriza. Sí; almacena, uno tras otro, los cuentos que más le gustan dentro de su cabeza adornada por una abundante y lisa cabellera negra.
En el colegio ya la conocen como la mejor narradora de historias fantásticas. En el recreo y en las clases de lenguaje se forma un corrillo a su alrededor. Entonces Myriam cuenta los cuentos, en voz bajita, con esa forma de hablar tan parecida al susurro que tiene la gente de su tierra.
Myriam tiene un cómplice: Ciro, el encargado de la biblioteca.
—¿Por qué no le dicen a mi mamá que es obligación venir los sábados? Como tengo que hacer las tareas en la casa no me da permiso… —le sugiere ella al oído, en secreto, cuando el viernes llega la hora de cerrar las puertas de la sala infantil.
Al terminar mi visita a la biblioteca le entregué a Myriam un libro.
—Es para tu profesora. Dile que cada noche se lo preste a un niño. Así lo podrán leer, metidos en la cama, antes de empezar a soñar…
Nunca había visto arrullar un libro como lo hizo ella. Lo estrechó contra su pecho y dobló la cabeza hasta besarlo como si fuera un muñeco.
—Y cuando terminen de leerlo todos, ¿quién se queda con él? —preguntó, y en sus diminutos ojos negros adiviné el brillo de una ilusión.
Sonrió con su timidez tierna, y entendí entonces que Myriam no tiene en su casa ni libros, ni muñecas, ni ositos de felpa…
Días después le envié de regalo dos libros. A la vuelta de correo recibí sus gracias: «Nunca pensé que te acordarías de mí», me escribió.
Siempre me acordaré de Myriam Prieto, la niña de ocho años que arrulla los libros como si fueran ositos de felpa.

International Children's Book Day 1992
Since 1967, on or around Hans Christian Andersen's birthday, 2 April, International Children's Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children's books.
Each year a different National Section of IBBY has the opportunity to be the international sponsor of ICBD. It decides upon a theme and invites a prominent author from the host country to write a message to the children of the world and a well-known illustrator to design a poster. These materials are used in different ways to promote books and reading. Many IBBY Sections promote ICBD through the media and organize activities in schools and public libraries. Often ICBD is linked to celebrations around children's books and other special events that may include encounters with authors and illustrators, writing competitions or announcements of book awards.
The sponsor for International Children's Book Day for 1992 is Colombia.

Myriam, the Girl Who Cradles Storybooks
Her name is Myriam Holden and she is eight years old.
“I don’t like my name,” was the first thing she timidly confessed. “At school they call me ‘Myriam hold-me’ and I feel ashamed.” And her dark face, round as an orange, suddenly blushed. I met her at the children’s hall in Pasto’s Public Library.
“She is the most assiduous reader,” said the young man whose job is to charm the children, not with magic flutes but with books. “She comes every afternoon, after school.”
“Why do you come so often?” I asked the little girl.
“It makes me very happy!” she said, raising her shoulders and leaning her head to one side. With this gesture she meant to tell me that for her, there was no other explanation needed.
But behind this truth, there lies another truth: Myriam is a bookworm, she loves reading and her mother, a cleaning lady, has never been able to buy her a storybook.
“What do you like to read?”
“Everything!” and again she raised her shoulders. “When I grow up I’d like to be a writer or an artist…”
The love this little girl has for books is so great that she has figured a way to keep them always with her: she learns, one by one, the stories she likes best, and keeps them in her head that is embellished by abundant and straight black hair.
At school they know her already as the best fantastic storyteller. During recess and Spanish class, a small group gathers around her. Myriam then tells them stories in a low voice, with that particular way of speaking that resembles a murmur, and is so characteristic of her people.
Myriam has an accomplice: It’s Ciro, the man in charge of the library. “Why don’t you tell the mother that I must come on Saturdays?” she whispers in Ciro’s ear every Friday, when the time comes to close the doors of the children’s hall. “I have so much work to do at home that she won’t allow me to come.”
At the end of my visit to the library I gave Myriam a book. “It’s for your teacher. Tell her to lend it to a different child every evening. This way they will all be able to read it, tucked into their beds, before they start to dream…”
I had never seen anyone cradle a book like she did that time. She held it against her heart and lowered her head to smell it as if it were a doll.
“And when everybody is done reading it, who keeps it?” she asked and in her tiny black eyes I saw a sparkle of hope. She smiled shyly and I understood then that Myriam did not have any books or dolls or teddy bears at home…
After a few days, I sent her two books as a present. In the mail I received a thank-you note: “I will never forget you,” she wrote.
