Desde 1967, el 2 de abril, coincidiendo con la fecha del nacimiento del escritor danés Hans Christian Andersen, el IBBY promueve la celebración del Día Internacional del Libro Infantil con el fin de promocionar los buenos libros infantiles y juveniles y la lectura entre los más jóvenes.
Cada año, una sección nacional del IBBY tiene la oportunidad de ser la patrocinadora internacional del Día del Libro Infantil y selecciona un escritor representativo y a un reconocido ilustrador de su país para que elaboren el mensaje dirigido a todos los niños del mundo y el cartel que se distribuye por todo el mundo, y se promueva la celebración en las bibliotecas, centros escolares, librerías, etc.

Qué hermoso es el mundo cuando brilla el sol. Las calles están brillantes, los árboles de un verde fresco, los pájaros cantan al máximo de sus voces, las flores nos deleitan con sus colores y fragancias. Pero cuando las nubes ocultan el sol, el mundo se vuelve oscuro y sombrío, los pájaros desaparecen de la vista y dejan de cantar, las flores tiemblan y agachan sus cabezas.
El sol es la fuente de luz y calor, y por lo tanto, la misma fuente de vida para nosotros. Si no hubiera sol, no habría hierba, ni árboles, ni insectos, ni vida en la Tierra en absoluto. No habría niños tampoco. Nadie para jugar en un planeta desierto y sin vida.
Que nadie robe el sol. Pertenece a todos nosotros, pero sobre todo a nuestros hijos, para que puedan crecer, deleitarse con el milagro de la vida, conocer las leyes de la naturaleza, la sabiduría transmitida de generación en generación.

Let No One Steal the Sun
How beautiful the world is when the sun is shining. The streets are bright, the trees fresh green, the birds sing at the top of their voices, the flowers delight us with their colours and fragrances. But when the clouds hide the sun, the world grows dark and gloomy, the birds disappear from view and cease to sing, the flowers shiver and bend their heads.
The sun is the source of light and warmth and therefore the very source of life for us. If there were no sun, there would be no grass, no trees, no insects, no life on Earth at all. There would be no children either. No one to play on a lifeless, deserted planet.
Let no one steal the sun. It belongs to us all, but above all to our children, so that they can grow, take delight in the miracle of life, get to know the laws of nature, the wisdom handed down from generation to generation.
In spite of this, there are wicked people who would like to steal it.
There are two kinds of clouds, which hide the sun.
There are clouds which shower the world with life-giving rain or sparkling snow. It does not matter if such clouds hide the sun for a while. On the contrary, everything that lives on Earth, that grows and flowers, needs not only warmth and light but water too. And after all, we know that as soon as the rain clouds have bestowed their water of life, the sun will again show us its kindly face, it will smile down brightly on a clean, fresh world.
But there are clouds which can black out the sun forever. They are terrible clouds of smoke and destruction, towering over the world like giant mushrooms. And one day these clouds could hide the sun, steal it from us once and for all. And they would not only steal the sun, they would steal life itself. They would put an end to life on the whole of our beautiful planet.
We must not allow these terrible clouds to take away our sun. The sun is life, belongs to all of us and no one has the right to steal it. It belongs to all children everywhere, so that they may play in its light, read the new books we write for them, grow up into wise and just inhabitants of this world and derive pleasure and satisfaction from work well done.
This is my message in the year which Unesco has declared the year of peace throughout the world. We writers declare on our word of honour that together with all other peace-loving people we shall defend the sun if anyone tries to steal it from the sky.
